Bhangra Crash Course

This year’s bhangra competition had a twist. Instead of giving the houses two weeks to prepare, they were given just one day. On Thursday formation was called at 10:30am where they were given this competition as a surprise. (This is where MPA students learn to their famous flexibility and can-do spirit!) They had until 6pm to put together a two minute bhangra routine. In that time they had to gather music, choreograph the routine, practice and get in costume to perform for the rest of the school by dinner. Besides being at least two minutes long, they needed to include their whole squad for at least sixteen counts. Otherwise, they could use eight members of their squad. The result was far less polished routines than we’ve seen in the past but it was a good challenge and they had fun. In the end, Blue House and White House tied for first followed by Gold House and Silver House.

Blue House

Blue House put together a solid performance under the direction of Surya Bahadur Kaur. Their costumes were great. They were quite polished and had a nice strong energy with simple bold moves.

White House

White House had a lot of fun elements in their routine, including a semi-circle around Akashpreet and Henry and a strong ending. They managed their time well throughout the day and had nice big smiles when they danced. Gurkirat Singh and Delfina led this house’s performance.

Gold House

Gold House was led by Paramjot Kaur and Manjot Singh. This routine had more complicated moves than most, they looked great in red and came through with a good performance.

Silver House

Silver House’s routine was choreographed by Anita. This house included their whole squad in a significant portion of the choreography. It was great to see everyone included and dancing but it did seem to slow down their process. Everyone enjoyed hearing Drake’s “In My Feelings” used in this routine.

Happy Diwali and Bandhi Chor Divas this Week!

THE STUDENTS COLLECTED MONEY AMONGST THEMSELVES AND BOUGHT SWEETS FOR THE TEACHERS AND STAFF MEMBERS.

This is a special time of year in India. It’s similar to Christmas or Chinese New Year. There are celebrations for several days with lots of sweets, get togethers and fireworks. The teachers put on a great celebration for the whole school, starting with a play depicting the Ramayana so that they could better understand the history of Diwali. It was fantastic! All the teachers came together to put on a great show with a wonderful set, costumes, and music. Everyone enjoyed it.

Following the performance, there were two activities for the students to participate in – tie dying and rangoli. Some of the students worked together to make beautiful sand art while others made tie dyed turbans or dupattas. After that, we all sat together to enjoy and extravagant lunch also prepared by the teachers. It was a wonderful uplifting day.

Creative Flair

Halloween is a fun time of year. The students get to show off their creative side, making costumes and then presenting them to the rest of the school. It’s fun trying to figure out the costumes and to watch all of the performances. Many people bring out a new side of themselves we haven’t seen before.

In order to score points for your squad, you need to get on the stage and act out your character. This is half the fun! Everyone who participated scored points for their squad with the awards going to Manjot Singh, Satinderpal Singh, Anmol, Julien W, Julien S, Mandeep Singh, Hanspreet Singh, Amber, and Sat Kriya Kaur. The houses scored the following points: Gold House 84, White House 80, Silver House 77, and Blue House 57.

This competition was held on Saturday night. On Wednesday, October 31st the intermediates girls carved pumpkins and decorated and then all the intermediates went trick-or-treating to all of the staff homes.

Warriors Saints in the Streets

Guru Ram Das Dev Ji’s birthday is always a wonderful time at the school and the highlight is participating in the Nagar Kirtan that travels all through Amritsar. It’s a chance for the students to join in the spirit of chardi kala with other devotees and demonstrate their skills in gatka. This year, like others, the Sikh Dharma International yatra joined us on the Nagar Kirtan and for lunch at Bharawan da Dhaba.
