David vs. Goliath

The girls and boys basketball and soccer teams just got back from an exciting weekend in Delhi. This is the annual trip to play against the American Embassy School (AES). This year we also had the pleasure of playing the American Embassy School from Doha. The extra team meant that the schedule was packed!

After arriving late Thursday night, we started the day by bowing at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, then going for breakfast at Khan Market. Khan Market is a treat with several French bakeries and pastries that we don’t have in Amritsar! After stocking up on baked goods, it was off to the American Embassy School where the girls, then boys played the Doha soccer team. After that, the girls played the AES varsity team in basketball, followed by the boys. We arrived back at the hotel around 8pm, in time for some Domino’s pizza and an early-ish lights out.

The following day was even more packed with eight games in total. There were three girls soccer games, three boys soccer games and one basketball game each for both the girls and boys teams. We arrived around 8am in the morning and finished around 8pm at night. After leaving the American Embassy School, we went to Ambience Mall and had a wonderful dinner at Jamie’s (Oliver) Kitchen with a little time to shop before the mall closed.

Arriving back at the hotel at midnight, we had a short sleep and were back up and out of the hotel at 6:15am in time to make our 7:20am train back home to Amritsar. We arrived around 2pm with lots of time to rest, recuperate and get ready for the week.

Overall it was a great weekend! The teams played great, with lots of energy and spirit. Even though there weren’t alot of wins, all of the games were close and were really fun to watch. Everyone who wasn’t on the field was on the sidelines or in the bleachers cheering away. This is certainly the highlight of the soccer and basketball season at MPA and the American Embassy School is fantastic competition. We’re grateful to be invited each year and have this weekend as a focus for the team’s efforts throughout the year.

Below are some pictures from the games, you can also check out several of the soccer matches on our Facebook page where they were streamed live.

Fateh to Gold House and to all Our Great Students

Yoga Competition

The yoga competition is the final competition of the year. It’s an opportunity for the students to practice and demonstrate a basic level of yogic fitness through the yogic fitness test which is comprised of three minutes of camel pose, bow pose and 108 frogs. It’s also an opportunity for certain students to push their limits in the individual competitions. The general ability for our students to practice plank pose, stretch pose and sarabdandes are pushed forward every year. Here were this year’s results including three new high scores.

Special Awards

At the end of each year we take time to celebrate those who have excelled and those who have put a tremendous amount of effort into the various aspects of the MPA program. Here are the students who were recognized this year. One unique award that was given this year was awarded to Manjot Singh for being an overall embodiment of the MPA Spirit. Manjot Singh excels in all aspects of the MPA program from academics to sports, yoga and leadership. He is always ready and willing to face anything with a positive attitude. He’s liked by all of the students and is a great representation of what MPA stands for and is trying to achieve. The yoga competition and the special awards were the last things to factor into this year’s winning house determination. Manjot Singh and fellow squad leader Paramjot Kaur led Gold House to their third victory in a row. Congratulations Gold House!

Soccer in the Sun!

There has been a lot going on at MPA this past month. Let’s get caught up!

The soccer competition happened in the middle of the blazing sun. Usually held in the winter months, the students got to fight it out in the April heat. All of the games were low scoring with only five goals scored overall. In the end Blue House won with one win and two draws with a goal differential of two. Gold House had the same record with a goal differential of one. In addition to points for first, second, third and fourth, points were given to the most valuable players, the top scorers and the house with the least goals scored against them. In the end Blue wound up with 75 points, Gold with 70, Silver with 35 and White with 20.
