Hola Mahala Trip

This monday we returned from our great spring break in Dharamsala. We had one day of rest and sports and then on wednesday a group of 25 students left for Anandpur Sahib to participate in the annual Hola Mahala festival. Our school is lucky enough to stay at Siri Singh Sahib’s estate which is far enough from the city that it is peaceful and quite, but close enough that you can see Keshghar Sahib on the horizon.

The purpose of our trip was to participate in the Nagar Kirtan. The Nagar Kirtan is always crowded and hectic, but this year it seemed more crowded then ever before. The procession goes from Keshghar Gurdwara to an open field where an old style horse and spear show is put on for the public.

It’s easy to see that Hola Mahala is the festival of color. Every person in the festival, by the end, is covered in multi colored dye. This festival is attended by people from all around india, families packing into tractors and whatever vehicle they have to be in Anandpur Sahib for Hola Mahala.

I asked one of the students, Jasdeep, what he thought of our trip.

„It was awesome! It’s great to see such a large group of sikhs coming together and having fun.“
