Parkarma Seva-40 days of devotional service

1We have started with our 40 days of Seva at the Sri Harmandir Sahib, commonly known as the Golden Temple. What an amazing opportunity to spend time immersed in the energy of such a magnificent place, the main reason why Miri Piri Academy is based in Amritsar.

The school has been doing this Seva for twenty years. Different generations of students have been going to serve in different ways, cleaning the floors of the Parkarma, making rotis (Indian flat bread), handing out water to drink or washing dishes. There are a lot of different sevas required to maintain the Temple as beautiful as it is, and to serve langar to everyone who goes to visit, a traditional part of the pilgrimage. The fact that the students get the chance to get involved in this way and spend that much time at the temple is invaluable. They are so fortunate! Because it is considered the most important Gurdwara for most Sikhs, there are many millions who pray daily for a chance to visit the Golden Temple just one time.

According to Yogic teachings, it takes 40 days to break a habit. That is the amount of time that our system takes to start recreating and restructuring new patterns so we can start acting in a different way and therefore change the negative habits that we might have. We have just begun the journey.

The Siri Singh Sahib Yogi Bhajan did Seva at the Golden Temple for 4.5 years when he used to live here, without missing a single day! The main reason why we take our students is so they can develop a selfless attitude of service and we encourage them to take this opportunity to the maximum. After they finished with their seva, they have enough time to practice the meditation they want to commit for these 40 days, or to take a holy dip while reciting Japji Sahib.

The schedule at school is rearranged during this time so the students can go to bed earlier and start with school later than usual. We have two morning times these days. We wake up for seva, go experience it, and then we come back home and there is time to sleep again. This is something really special and meaningful that will affect us in a positive way for the rest of our lives.
